Many congregations use VBS as a tool for outreach to non-member children. Some have requested a VBS that is a bit more "evangelistic." Five Words of Understanding answers this need.
From St. Paul's words that he would rather speak five words of understanding than 10,000 words in a tongue, this VBS program teaches the five words of the ICHTHUS.
What is the ICHTHUS? ICHTHUS is Greek for fish. Christians used the fish symbol because the five letters that spell out ICHTHUS are the first letters of the confession, "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior."
This VBS program, then, is as simple as possible: It teaches Who Jesus is and what He has done for us according to these words. Water flows through each lesson, drawing thirsty children into the waters of Holy Baptism.
Here is a summary of the lessons for the five days:
(ICHTHUS = Iesos Christos Theou Uios Soter = Jesus Christ God’s Son Savior)
Day One: An introduction to the theme, the lesson teaches the story of Jesus preaching from the boat (Luke 5: 1-10). Title: "Caught in His Net."
Day Two Here is the first letter, I. Today’s lesson teaches the meaning of the name "Jesus," which is "He saves." The story is Jesus saving Peter from the waves (Matthew 14: 22-33). Title: "Save Me!"
Day Three Based=2 0on the second letter, CH*, the children will learn about the name "Christ." They will learn how Jesus is the anointed King of kings Who rules over sin, death, and the devil. They will learn of Jesus’ baptism and His consequential victory over Satan in the wilderness (Luke 3-4). Title: "Anointed."
Day Four Taught together as one, the third and fourth letters, THU*, mean "God’s Son." On this day the children will learn about the Holy Trinity and Jesus’ place in the Trinity. They will learn that Jesus is truly God when they see how He has power over the winds and the sea (Matthew 8: 23-27). Title: "Who can this be?"
Day Five The final letter, S, means "Savior." Today, the children will learn how Jesus saves them in Holy Baptism (Mark 15 & Acts 2). Title: "Baptized and Saved."
*Remember, in Greek, CH and TH are one letter!
